With advances in technology, we are discovering new tick-borne disease (TBD) agents and have more tests available to us than ever. It is getting harder to know which patients to test, which tests to run, and what to do with the results. We will review some indications for testing sick dogs and discuss the benefits of screening healthy dogs for exposure to or infection with TBD agents.

Adam Birkenheuer is a professor of small-animal internal medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to his clinical duties in the
small-animal hospital, Dr. Birkenheuer is a codirector of the Vector Borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. His research program is focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of companion-animal infectious diseases.
