Abnormal Erythrocyte Morphology as Diagnostic Aids

 

This session covers the mechanisms, appearance, and diagnostic significance of abnormal erythrocyte morphologies, particularly in the differential diagnosis of anemia. Dr. John Harvey will address rouleaux and agglutination, key shape abnormalities (spherocytes, echinocytes, schistocytes, and others), and how the IDEXX InVue analyzer compares to glass slide blood films for identifying these features, along with best practices for reporting nucleated erythrocytes.

 

Dr. John Harvey, DVM, PhD, DACVP, earned his DVM from Kansas State University and his PhD from UC Davis, and is board-certified by the ACVP as Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. A recognized expert in comparative hematology with over 200 publications, he is the author of "Veterinary Hematology: A Diagnostic Guide and Color Atlas" and has received numerous lifetime achievement honors, including from the ASVCP, ISACP, and ESVCP.

From Common to Confounding: A Case-Based Spectrum of Canine Lymphoproliferative Disorders

 

Canine lymphoma and leukemia span a wide range of immunophenotypes, clinical behaviors, and prognoses. This case-based session integrates CBC, cytology, and flow cytometry findings across that spectrum, moving from commonly encountered phenotypes to rarer, diagnostically challenging cases, with an emphasis on how phenotype shapes prognosis and treatment planning.

 

Dr. Emily Rout, DVM, PhD, DACVP, is a board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist and Co-Director of the Clinical Hematopathology Laboratory at Colorado State University, where she also serves as Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on lymphoma and leukemia in dogs and cats, with particular interest in molecular diagnostics and immunophenotyping, and she has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications.

What the Numbers Miss: How Dot Plots and Blood Morphology Complete the CBC

 

Automated CBC counts alone can miss valuable diagnostic clues. Through a series of clinical cases, this session demonstrates how dot plot patterns and cellular morphology reveal abnormalities that numbers alone can overlook, and explores how AI-enabled analyzers like the IDEXX inVue Dx are expanding access to advanced hematologic evaluation at the point of care. Attendees will leave with a practical approach for extracting more diagnostic value from every CBC.

 

Dr. Dudley, DVM, MS, DACVIM, is a board-certified veterinary internist and Medical Affairs Veterinarian supporting hematology for IDEXX, having earned her DVM from Purdue University and completed her internal medicine residency at The Ohio State University. Before joining Medical Affairs in January 2026, she spent several years in specialty practice followed by a decade with IDEXX consulting with practitioners on complex medical cases.
